Message from the Executive Director

Happy July everyone!
I hope you have had the chance to enjoy some summer fun and relaxation. Personally, I love summer because I think life is much better while in flip flops!
LAPCS has stayed busy since the end of the school year traveling to North Louisiana to visit with membership; working with several charter boards on strategic planning; and hosting our annual July Bottom Line Summer Workshop, where we released the first edition of the Louisiana Charter School Handbook for School Administrators.
Similar to the Charter Board Legal Handbook that is in its fourth year, the School Leader Handbook is a collaboration between LAPCS, Louisiana Appleseed, and attorneys from Baker Donelson and is intended to be a one stop reference guide to Louisiana's laws and policies for those people leading charter schools--both newcomers and veterans alike.
Each charter school will eventually receive a hard copy version of the book, but in the meantime, please refer to the online and PDF versions. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Legal and Policy Director (and co-author), Sarah Vandergriff at
Again, enjoy the rest of the summer and be sure to start thinking about joining us for our 10th Anniversary Celebration at the Louisiana Charter Schools Conference. There are lots of opportunities for you to connect; whether you're interested in award nominations, early bird registrations, or becoming a sponsor.
Caroline Roemer
Executive Director

LAPCS Bottom Line Summer Workshops

This summer LAPCS brought together our charter school members with the experts for our Summer Bottom Line Training Workshops across the state.
These are intensive training programs to help schools troubleshoot in the areas of Finance, HR, Legal Compliance, and other leadership and governance best practices.
The sessions concluded with a two day NOLA training on important public charter issues like Bullying Laws, ELL, and Immigration along with best practices for Employee Handbooks. In addition, the new School Leader Handbooks were previewed for our participants.

LAPCS Top Shelf Charter Board Retreats

The Top Shelf is taking it on the road. We've been facilitating board retreats for charter schools across the state. With school out, boards are focused on their own self-education and renewal.
The goal of our retreats is to share innovative governance approaches to boards in an engaging and interactive format. We work closely with you to identify your needs, and then tailor the program to address them. Our retreats range from refreshers on basic board responsibilities to workshop-style strategic planning sessions.

“LAPCS has taught me two very important things ... the work board members do 1) can't be done alone, and 2) must be done with a thorough understanding of the current issues that will affect your schools, students, and families in the future."  - Travis Chase, New Beginnings School Foundation and Rooted School, Board Member

Please contact our Governance Director, Neil Ranu, if you would like to discuss a retreat for your board. You can learn more about all of our customized professional development opportunities here.

Officials Expect Federal Approval on ESSA Plan by August

Top officials of the state Department of Education said they are encouraged by the federal response to the state’s plan for revamping public schools in Louisiana. The state expects a final decision on its ESSA proposal from federal officials by mid-August, which is when most public schools start the new academic year.

Lessons Learned from Award-Winning Charter School Leaders

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools announced the Top Five Sessions at the National Charter Schools Conference last month; including a session by Dr. Howard Fuller, Chester Finn, and LAPCS Executive Director Caroline Roemer entitled "25 Years of Charters: Lessons Learned and Moving Forward."
This breakout session explored a range of imperative questions, such as “What makes charters schools successful?” and “What key issues are charter schools still facing today and how can they be resolved?” Ultimately, the consensus of both the audience and speakers was that we must find a way to continue moving forward in order to make great schools accessible to each and every single student, regardless of their social or economic background.

With nearly 500 attendees, LAPCS’ Annual Louisiana Charter School Conference is the place to connect to the state's 145 charter schools serving nearly 80,000 students.
