A warm welcome to new faculty: Dr. John Karijolich has joined our ranks
on July 1, 2016!
Let's get to know Dr. Karijolich a bit better:
Q: Please give us a description of your research interests
I'm interested in understanding the role noncoding RNAs play in gene regulation and innate immune modulation during host-virus interactions, specifically in the context of oncogenic gammaherpesviral infections (i.e. Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and Epstein Barr virus). The noncoding RNAs I primarily focus on our host-encoded and retrotransposon-derived, though I'm also quite interested in the function of viral ncRNAs.
Q: Which of your recent papers do you consider as among your most critical?
Karijolich J and Yu YT. Converting Nonsense Codons into Sense Codons by Targeted Pseudouridylation. Nature 2011
Karijolich J, Abernathy E, and Glaunsinger BG. Infection-induced Retrotransposon-Derived Noncoding RNAs Enhance Herpesviral Gene Expression via the NF-kB Pathway. PLoS Path. 2015
Q: Where can we find you these days?
Lab: MCN A4302
Office: MCN A4301
Q: What are you looking for in your Vandy colleagues (other than a good map of the buildings ;)) ?
I'm looking forward to an intellectually stimulating environment that will help me think about my research in new ways. And possibly related to the last question below, someone to help get a departmental basketball game going on!
Q: What do you like to do outside research?
Outside of research I spend most of my time with my wife and our almost 3 year old daughter. I also love to go to the gym to workout as well as play basketball and volleyball.
