Dean's Message:
The Role and Impact of Engineering Co-op

2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the Engineering Co-op Program at GVSU. This summer, the School of Engineering will be sending out its largest class of first-term co-op students in the history of the program. Nearly 140 sophomores will be placed in industry to gain real-world experience in a professional setting.
The engineering programs at GVSU were developed at the urging of the industrial community in west Michigan as a partnership between the university and our industry partners.  Based upon the insight of both the faculty and industry professionals, cooperative education was designed into the engineering programs as a fundamental element.  The intention at the time was to provide uniquely mature graduates who had both the traditional elements of an engineering education and industry based professional experience that would allow them to enter their careers as fully prepared professionals immediately upon graduation.

School of Engineering Co-op Engagement & Support Opportunities

The Padnos College is committed to the role of experiential learning in preparing professionals for careers in engineering and computing. As part of this initiative, all students pursuing an undergraduate engineering degree must complete the integrated cooperative education program. The co-op program has led to national recognition and a 100% job placement for our graduates.
As we celebrate our 30th year of engineering cooperative education, we recently established the Engineering Cooperative Education Fund. Proceeds from this fund will assist in underwriting the costs of developing and maintaining the relationships and infrastructure needed to support our co-op program. As a bonus, Dean Plotkowski will match all gifts up to the first $500 donated!

GVSU Engineering Celebrates 30 Years of Co-op Education

The School of Engineering at Grand Valley State University is celebrating 30 years of developing engineering talent for Michigan and the region through its co-op program.
What started as a handful of students in 1986 has grown to nearly 300 junior- and senior-level students this year. As the School of Engineering grew in enrollment, so did cooperative education, a program that requires students to complete a full year of paid intern work for an employer.
