This May, we also honor two important observances: Jewish American Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness month. We also have our last event of the year, Silent Book Club. Here are the details:
Silent Book Club – May 13th – 4pm -- Duques 150 (Crain Center)
Our last event of Spring is a silent book club event. No assigned reading—just bring a book you’re enjoying. We’ll read quietly, then open up space to share thoughts, hear different perspectives, and spark conversation. A relaxed way to connect through books and the ideas they inspire. Thanks to Elizabeth Blindauer for her leadership in this event.
Jewish American Heritage Month
Jewish American Heritage Month is a time to recognize the rich cultural, intellectual, and civic contributions of Jewish Americans, as well as the resilience and strength that have defined their history in this country. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the persistence of antisemitism—both overt and insidious—and to reaffirm our commitment to standing against hate in all its forms.
This month, consider reading a work by a Jewish author, attending a local cultural event, or engaging with resources that highlight the multifaceted history and experience of Jewish communities in the U.S. Here are some activities happening this month: DC Jewish Film Festival, Smithsonian Collection on Jewish American History.
Mental Health Awareness Month
This is a time to bring attention to the importance of mental well-being. This month encourages us to pause, check in with ourselves and one another. Let’s take this opportunity to remind our community—and ourselves—that seeking support is a sign of strength, and that mental health deserves the same compassion and attention as physical health.
You can find here the wellbeing resources available to the GW community, and counseling services for students.
I hope you will take this opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and recharge as we close out the semester and look ahead to what is next.
Warmly,
