The Tennessee State Library and Archives is hosting a summer institute for licensed, classroom educators on World War I. The National Union

The National Union was a song written about Henry Clay’s role in the Compromise of 1850. The music cover prominently shows a gold chain, where each link represents a state in the U.S. in 1851. The quote, “In Union’s Chain, within its Spell, Freedom and peace and safety dwell,” telling the audience that the Compromise kept the union intact and managed to ensure the peace of its citizens. The piece is dedicated to Clay, who wrote a note mentioning his flattery at the content. Though the Compromise of 1850 delayed the Civil War, disagreements regarding the Fugitive Slave laws prevailed and continued to cause strife between the states in the years leading up to the war.

Library and Archives Sponsored Workshops

For the 2017-2018 school year, the Library and Archives education team has selected World War I as the topic for our teacher workshop series. Focusing on the analysis of primary sources in classroom instruction, this workshop will explore the various ways Tennesseans participated in the war and how the war's development impacted Tennesseans, both at home and abroad. Topics include reasons for American entry into the war, doughboy experiences, the home front and new technology.

This workshop meets the curriculum standards for World War I found in the fifth grade, high school American history and high school World history curriculum.

Licensed, classroom teacher participants receive lunch and a $25 stipend to assist with mileage and travel expenses. Workshop locations and dates are in the sidebar to the right.

To register for a workshop, please visit our website. If you would like to register, please follow the link below the city/date you wish to attend. Several spots are still open at each of the seven remaining workshops across the state. Please contact Casey.Gymrek@tn.gov for questions.
