Philippians 4:7-9
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

          "Give me peace, give me peace, give me peace." Robert Duval played the role of Sonny, the lapsed minister in the movie, The Apostle, who prayed that prayer. At this point he had lost his wife and was crying out to God for help. He prayed so loud he awakened his neighbors. When one called, his mother, played by Loretta Lynn said, "That's just Sonny praying. Sometimes he talks to God and sometimes he yells at God." Do you ever pray like that?

          Our world is screaming for peace. When we read about Syria and South Sudan we feel that peace is slippery, sometimes just beyond their grasp. A brief review of political rhetoric reminds us that our country, too, struggles for peace. Sin is the enemy of peace because it disrupts and "vandalizes the shalom" as Cornelius Plantinga puts it. 

          Paul wrote to the Philippians during the Pax Romana, the Roman Peace. Twice he told them to rejoice in the Lord always. No matter where believers are, we are always in the Lord. Paul encouraged the worried to pray instead with gratitude for God's goodness. One path to peace is prayer. God's transcendent peace protects us when we pray. Prayer changes the way we think. Make v. 8 your homework for today. Paul promised the presence of God as the guarantor of our peace. Without God there can be no peace! Know God, know peace. No God, no peace.

Father, give us peace, give us peace, give us peace. Thank you for the promise of your presence with us today. In the name of the Prince of Peace. Amen.
