Do you remember black and white T.V.? Contrast that with HD Color T.V. today. Totally different! Characters in some ancient literature feel black and white to us. But when we read John’s story of Jesus, the characters come to life. Nicodemus came after dark, slinking in the shadows, seeking a Savior. The Samaritan woman came to the well in broad daylight.
Many ancient stories of romance begin at a well. Jacob and Rachel come to mind. Why does Jesus send all twelve disciples to get food for thirteen people? Did he anticipate this encounter with the woman? How did he know her story better than she did? After five marriages she had conceded to living with her beau. As the seventh man in her life, Jesus offered more. More than water from a well, he offered her the water of life. She ran to tell her friends and they came to see Jesus.
First, these Samaritans who were waiting for a teaching Messiah came to Jesus because of the woman’s words. Ultimately, they believed because of their own encounter with Jesus. In the end we each encounter Christ for ourselves. Our parents’ faith will not save us because God doesn’t have grandchildren. Having a Christian friend does not make us right with God. Have you owned your faith? Is it in black and white or in color for you? Nebulous or clear? Why do you believe in Jesus? Don’t stop seeking truth until you find the one who is the Truth.
