Have you heard, “Blood is thicker than water”? Who is your family?

Luke 8:20-21
Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”
New International Version (NIV)
Have you heard, “Blood is thicker than water”?  We mean that our family attachments are primary.  Who is your family?  While he lived on this earth, Jesus celebrated the blessings of a human family.  We know Joseph and Mary welcomed him into the world.  On this occasion, his mother and brothers came to see him.  We know Jesus loved his family.  He entrusted the care of his mother to John, his apostle.  His brothers James and Jude later became leaders in the church writing our books by those names.
Jesus also enjoyed extended family in his followers.  Luke alone tells us about Joanna and Susanna who helped support his ministry (Luke 8:3).  As Jesus cared for the souls of people, they became attached to him and believed in him.
Like Jesus, we soon discover that along with our earthly families, our church family helps us on our way in this life.  What binds us together?  We commit ourselves to hear God’s word and put it into practice.  As it turns out, Jesus’ blood really is thicker than water.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for our earthly families, imperfect as they sometimes are.  Thank you also for your people in the church.  Help us to live in right relationship with you, our families and the body of Christ, we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
