Blouin Scholars Explore History of Exploitation in the United States

The Class of 2025 Blouin Scholars cohort traveled south last week for a unique opportunity to view the historical nature of exploitation in our country with an emphasis on civil rights and slavery. The domestic trip serves to promote team building as well as further develop their understanding of local and global social justice issues, what can and should be done to reduce problems that exist today, and what can be done to prevent social injustices in the future. The group stopped at the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, home to the Underground Railroad Museum, the Birmingham Civil Rights Center, and the Whitney Plantation in New Orleans, which discusses plantation life from the perspective of the enslaved people.  The trip to New Orleans included volunteering at the Giving Hope Food Bank and visiting the Eden House, an organization dedicated to protecting and serving women who have been trafficked. The group went to Holy Mass at the Cathedral which was celebrated by the Archbishop, and they visited the New Orleans African American History Museum. On their last day, the group went to the Rosa Parks Montgomery Bus Boycott Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. The Walsh University community is excited to see how these scholars will use this experience in the community next year.

Walsh University Chamber Singers on Tour in Nashville

The Walsh University Chamber Singers also departed for a four-day tour of Cincinnati and Nashville last week. In addition to performing at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville, the students went to concerts and even attended a rehearsal of the famous May Festival Chorus in Cincinnati. It was a wonderful four days of music, culture, and spirit.

Walsh University and Strengthening Stark Host International Guests at Economic Development Conference

A 360 One Firm economic development conference co-hosted by Walsh University and Strengthening Stark attracted professionals from across the globe to the Marlene and Joe Toot Global Learning Center on May 11, to discuss topics related to economic development, sustainable manufacturing, and innovative workforce development strategies. The event, typically held in large metropolitan areas such as Cleveland and Columbus included Canton this year after event organizers learned of the innovative programs and economic development opportunities produced by Walsh University’s Skilled Technical Workforce Program. Since its inception, Walsh University has enrolled over 70 Ohio companies and issued over 1,000 technology-based credentials. Read More

Restorative Connections through Peer Mentoring in Education 

Walsh University’s Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health led by Michelle Bemiller, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology and Applied Criminal Justice, received a grant for the Restorative Connections through Peer Mentoring in Education program. Through the Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health, and with Dr. Bemiller’s supervision, Walsh students Olivia Carter-Nye, Natalie Woodlock, Jimmy Kast, and Riley Bemiller-Kelley will facilitate restorative justice processes with Our Lady of Peace Catholic School (OLOP) K-5 students throughout the month of June. At OLOP, restorative games facilitated through restorative circle processes will help students develop interpersonal skills, empathy, connect with peers and team building. This project was funded in partnership with the Stark County Mental Health & Addiction Recovery and funded through the StarkMHAR Charitable Fund at Stark Community Foundation. The Center for Restorative Justice and Community Health at Walsh University launched in fall of 2022 with a fundamental goal of encouraging cultural humility and providing education and resources that help build and maintain healthy relationships both on and off campus.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the annual May Days sponsored by the Center for Academic and Professional Enrichment (CAPE), directed by Dr. Ute Lahaie, and to those who facilitated the workshops throughout the week, including Dr. Amy Heston who chaired the Quality Matters (QM) Ohio Consortium held at Walsh University.

Three Walsh University faculty celebrated commencement at Youngstown State University this month. Dr. Alexia Lairson, Dr. Michele Tilstra, and Dr. Matthew Mucha each were awarded a Ph.D. in Health Sciences. For all three of these faculty, this is their second earned doctoral degree, having each earned clinical doctorates previously. Read More
