Greetings From the Dean

The 2023-24 academic year has begun with an excited group of new students coming on board. After saying “goodbye” to our largest engineering and computer science graduating class (110) in May, we said “hello” to 215 new students in August.
In May 2024, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first engineering class to graduate from Cedarville. That first class of 40 students has grown to become more than 650 students in six majors. Since ABET provided official notification that our civil engineering program received accreditation retroactive to our inaugural group of graduates (more on that below), every one of our engineering and computer science graduates received their degrees from an ABET-accredited program. We praise the Lord for blessing us!
You'll also read about a new electrical and computer engineering faculty member who has joined us, Dr. Yuan (Edward) Meng, and learn about his groundbreaking concussion research. He will be filling the large hole in our faculty ranks that was created when one of our long-time faculty members, Dr. Jeff Shortt, retired following the spring 2023 semester. Another highlight for this newsletter stems from the growth in the number of our computer science (CS) and cyber operations (CY) majors. We recently renovated the CS/CY Suite of four labs. These students have found the space to be a comfortable place to engage with their design teams, have some down time, or connect with friends.

In Christ,
Bob Chasnov, PhD, PE
Dean

Civil Engineering Program Receives ABET Accreditation

Nearly five years since its inception, our civil engineering program has received accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The civil engineering program, and its five concentrations — structural, international infrastructure, environmental, water resources, and general civil — was awarded accreditation retroactively from October 2021 through September 2025. Our first civil engineering class had a 100% first-time pass rate on the professional engineering exam! We give God all the glory for the program's success.

Concussion Research Could Be a Game Changer

In 2022, according to research studies by the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Texas, approximately 5 in 10 concussions were undiagnosed, due largely in part to the subjectivity of typical concussion tests. Seeing this negative trend, Dr. Edward Meng, our new Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering, sought to find a solution to this problem with help from faculty members at Auburn University, where he completed his doctoral studies.

Robotics Team Takes Top Prize In Engineering Competition

It takes a commitment to be part of Cedarville University’s robotics team that competes each year in the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Robotics competition. This year, 19 engineering students — all freshmen and sophomores — entered the “Star Spangled Defender” in the national competition held in Baltimore, Maryland, and came away with top honors. It’s the 10th time in 23 years that a Cedarville University team has won the event.
