Semifinalists for the prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program
Lansdowne, VA – The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has announced the selection of 477 high school seniors as semifinalists for the prestigious Cooke College Scholarship Program. This highly selective scholarship provides high-achieving students up to $40,000 annually for four years of college. The semifinalists were chosen from a pool of over 5,300 applicants. Dawit Girma (Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet, Nashville) is one of only three students in the State of Tennessee to be selected. Approximately 60 semifinalists will be chosen to receive the scholarship. The 2020 Cooke College Scholarship recipients will be announced in April.

Germeen Tanas selected as 2020 Pionero Scholar at Lipscomb University
Germeen Tanas has been selected as a 2020 Pionero Scholar! Germeen is planning to become a high school English teacher. The Pionero scholarship will make Lipscomb tuition-free for Germeen in combination with her other aid.

MLK Places in the Anne Smedinghoff Academic WorldQuest challenge
The Tennessee World Affairs Council extended a very well done to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Magnet High School team for their SECOND PLACE showing in Sunday's championship match of the Anne Smedinghoff Academic WorldQuest challenge. Parwan, Mallory, Xiyan, and Michael did a terrific job in preparing for a tough 100 question test of their global affairs awareness. As a result, they bested teams from a number of schools that had produced WorldQuest championship teams in recent years. Mrs. Katherine Prather aided their preparation and can be justly proud of MLK's achievement.

Headline TextCoach: Carlene Taylor
The Middle School Science Olympiad Team participated in Regionals at Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, February 22nd. The team consists of 22 7th-9th grade students. The team earned 6th place out of 14 schools. Several students earned medals at this event.
- Millie Peterson and Maya Carpenter, 3rd place in Crime Busters. Juniper Morton and Brennan Saine, 2nd place in Disease Detective. Juniper Morton and Emma Blaney, 1st place in Food Science & Nathan Ashley and Ryan Vila, 3rd place.Olivia Boyer and Emma Blaney, 1st place Dynamic Planet & Ezra Hathway-Ruiz and Ryan Vila, 4th place. Juniper Morton, Jackson Wang and Spencer Nicholas earned 2nd place in experimental design & Manuela Mechil and Ryan Vila earned 5th place. Olivia Boyer and Jack Halloran earned 4th place in Meteorology. Christian Estaban and Ezra Gonzalez earned 6th in Game On. Brennan Saine and Yash Kale earned 1st in Circuit Lab and Nathan Ashley and Ezra Hathway-Ruiz earned 5th. Millie Peterson and Maya Carpenter earned 2nd in Write Do It. Emma Blaney and Lena Feleke earned 2nd in Road Scholar. Ezra Gonzalez and Lena Feleke earned 1st in Density Lab. Ezra Gonzalez and Christian Estaban earned 4th in Machines

High School Science Olympiad
On February 29th, MLK took two teams to compete in the high school Regional Science Olympiad Tournament at Tennessee Tech. MLK won 2nd place overall at the tournament, securing a spot to compete at the State Tournament at UTK in April. Special congratulations to Tom Nguyen, Neeraj Namburu, and Mert Sekmen for working diligently all year and leading their team to victory.

Red Cross Blood Drive, 3/25
Our LAST blood drive of the school year is almost here! MLK is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive in the Big Gym from 8:00-2:00 on Wednesday, 3/25.
Parents/Guardians, if you are interesting in donating, please send me an email with your preferred appointment time. We have appointments every 15 minutes. Students, please stop by my classroom to set up your appointment. If you donated in January, you are eligible for this blood drive.
A few exciting things:
- If you donate blood 3 times, you will receive a red cord to wear at graduation!
- The sports team, club, student organization, etc. with the most blood donors will earn a pizza party from Ms. Cain.
A few important reminders:
You must be at least 16 years old to donate. Please see Ms. Cain for the required forms (16 year-olds have two forms, 17+ year-olds have one form).

Former French Student visitsWhile on spring break to visit her family in Nashville, Olivia Connor, 2019 MLK graduate, spoke to Madame Weaver's advanced classes about her experience at McGill University in Montreal*, Québec, Canada, where she is studying Political Science. Olivia said she has the possibility of graduating in just three years due to the difference in the high school/college system in Québec, which took into consideration her AP courses at MLK. She is enjoying interacting with students from all over Canada and other parts of the world, as well as practicing her French skills when off-campus. The one thing she has not yet been able to do is to get used to the cold! Olivia attended the annual “Carnaval de Québec” in Québec City recently, a major winter festival, where she and her friends spent seven hours outside in sub-zero temperatures! At least she got to see the famous “Bonhomme du Carnaval” – the snowman mascot! Merci beaucoup Olivia, et bonne continuation!

Prom Updates
Prom deadlines will be extended as follows:
- Tickets will be on sale until March 13. The ticket price is $75 per ticket. You can buy prom tickets online here. Or, you can buy prom tickets from Mrs. Williams (room 2312) during school next week (March 9 – 13).
- After purchasing a ticket online, please fill out this form to aid Mrs. Williams in collecting information on prom dates.
- Guest forms are due March 13. If you need a guest form, you can access it here.

- Tickets will be distributed during club time on Wednesday, March 11.
Dress Assistance
