The Empowering Change Task Force is pleased to share the following with our Tulane University School of Social Work community.

Call for Student Members

We have seven student slots open to the on-campus and online MSW, DSW, and MS/DRL programs. All interested parties should reach out to the task force coordinators by Sunday, February 28, 2021.

The Empowering Change Task Force was created by Dean Patrick Bordnick on June 25, 2020, to examine issues of racism, power, privilege, and oppression within the Tulane School of Social Work (TSSW). Dean Bordnick appointed Dr. Deidre Hayes and Dr. Reginald Parquet as Co-Chairs of the Task Force. The aim of the Task Force is to examine policies, protocols, and procedures that impact systemic racism within TSSW. As an independent entity, the Task Force will assess the School’s response to equity, diversity, and inclusion issues (EDI) within the school and its curriculum. The overarching goal is to act to dismantle ways racism and oppression systemically effects the TSSW community. The Task Force will review documents and recommendations from the Difficult Conversations Committee composed of TSSW students, faculty and alumni, and the student led Anti-racist coalition to develop a set of goals and objectives that will lead to long-term systemic change within TSSW. The entity provides regular reports to ensure transparency and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, alumni and stakeholders.

Educational Opportunity

The annual Empowerment and Policy Conference, powered by the Urban League of Louisiana and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, is a statewide convening designed to examine systems, influence policy decisions, and enact changes that will positively impact the African American and other communities. Topics for the conference include health equity, criminal justice reform, voter education and engagement, economic opportunity, and education. The virtual event is February 26 and 27, and registration is available here.
