CME E-Tracking Mandate Begins Sept. 1 |
Starting September 1, 2026, physicians seeking license renewals will need to log CME through an electronic tracking system Texas Medical Board (TMB) will use to fulfill a new state mandate.
Passed during last year's legislative session, Senate Bill 912 requires health care licensing entities in Texas to verify that a license seeker meets continuing education requirements through an electronic tracking system. Read more here.
TMB encourages physicians to establish an account with CE Broker, an online continuing education compliance platform, before September 1, so they can get familiar with the platform. The Texas Legislature passed SB 1188 last year that requires physicians using AI for diagnostic support “to disclose that use to patients and to review AI-generated records in accordance with medical record standards.” According to the Harris County Medical Society (HCMS) the law “also updates transparency and data-handling expectations for electronic health records that incorporate AI tools."
HCMS further noted “nationally, a recent presidential executive order aims to create a 'national policy framework' for artificial intelligence and to limit the growth of inconsistent state AI regulations. However, it’s crucial to understand that an executive order does not, by itself, nullify state law. Such orders are policy directives—not legislation—and they do not create binding federal rules nor automatically preempt state statutes. They may direct federal agencies to challenge state laws they view as inconsistent with federal priorities, and they may encourage federal legislation, but only Congress can enact laws that would formally override state regulation." Thus, laws such as the new Texas one will remain effective unless struck down in court or superseded by others. Read more from HCMS AI Committee here.
