🚨 Important: Current legislature relevant to ocean observing in California 🚨
|
Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observation System (ICOOS) Reauthorization Act: Introduced June 20 by Senators Wicker (R-MS) and Cantwell (D-WA), this bill (S.2126) would reauthorize the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) for five years at $56M/year, supporting vital coastal monitoring for coastal communities, fisheries, and maritime industries. Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control (HABHRCA) Reauthorization Act: Bills to renew the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Act have advanced in both the Senate and House. The legislation strengthens NOAA and EPA roles, enhances data sharing and forecasting, and expands support to state, local, and Tribal partners.

California Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Bulletin

The March-April 2025 CA HAB Bulletin summarizes a major domoic acid (DA) event. The ecological impacts observed surpassed those of the past four years, with toxins affecting CA sea lions and other pinnipeds, dolphins, sea birds, larger cetaceans, and producing multiple seafood advisories.
