Our spring semester is in full swing, which means our faculty, staff, and students are hard at work making a difference in the lives of others. I am delighted to share the latest issue of E-Viewpoints with you, so you can learn more about some of our faculty, students, and alumni. 

In this issue, you will find faculty who are making progress in their quest to better understand Alzheimer’s Disease and who are receiving recognition for their contributions to mental health professions. You will read more about our student Banner Bearer from December 2021 graduation and Family and Consumer Sciences Education alumna and TTU Health Sciences Center President, Lori Rice-Spearman. These are two individuals that are using their Human Sciences backgrounds to help others. As always, our students and alumni continue to pave the way in improving and enhancing the human condition.

Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management Major Perseveres Through Hardships as a First-Generation Student
Bruce Allen is currently a Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management (RHIM) major, planning to graduate in the spring of 2023. He started the program with very little knowledge about the industry, but his inspiration for the field came from his dad. Growing up, Allen faced many hardships as a young child. His family struggled financially, and at one point, they were homeless, sleeping at the hotel where his dad worked. Luckily, Allen was able to get a great high school education at Dallas Lutheran School.

Lori Rice-Spearman, Ph.D., is the ninth president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and the first female president in the Texas Tech University System. Rice-Spearman graduated from Texas Tech's Family and Consumer Sciences Education doctoral program in 2010. Rice-Spearman joined TTUHSC in 1987 and has held multiple leadership positions since.

Vijay Hegde's Novel Approach May Help Cure Alzheimer's Disease
Eight years ago, Vijay Hegde began studying the connection between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. When he began as an assistant professor in Texas Tech University's Department of Nutritional Sciences, Hegde's focus was a natural progression of the work that brought him there. But his research took a dramatically personal turn after his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. With a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Hegde is working toward new treatment options for the disease that claimed his father's life.

Apparel Design and Manufacturing Students Create Unique Clothing Designs for Local Lubbock Children
The Surface Design course partnered with local Lubbock children to create custom designs that cater to each child. The students were tasked to incorporate techniques in their designs to help the clothing become adaptable for children. Students were paired up with a child and spent time getting to know them and learning about their style.

Browning Selected as School of Financial Planning Interim Director

Chris Browning, Ph.D., was named the new interim director for the School of Financial Planning at Texas Tech. Browning has served at Texas Tech since 2013 as an assistant professor and undergraduate program director for Personal Financial Planning since 2018. Prior to Texas Tech, Browning was the department chair at East Central University from 2011 to 2013 and previously taught at West Texas A&M University.

3 CulinaryMed Docs is Cooking Up an Innovative Approach to Medical Care

Three College of Human Sciences entrepreneurs reach across disciplines to come together to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and patients managing chronic disease. Allison Childress, Shannon Galyean, and Michelle Alcorn are teaming up to develop an app “equipped with machine learning that will customize recipes, meal plans, and nutrition education for each person to help them manage their chronic disease nutritionally.”

Faculty Member Named NAMI Texas Mental Health Professional of the Year
Thomas Kimball, Ph.D. Named NAMI Texas Mental Health Professional of the Year
Thomas Kimball, Ph.D., is a licensed marriage and family therapist in the Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies doctoral program at Texas Tech. Kimball also serves as the Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities (CCRC) director. He works with a team of staff and student assistants to provide resources to those dealing with and recovering from mental health disorders. Kimball has continuously served as an advocate for mental health services in the Texas Tech community, earning national recognition.

Skyviews Restaurant to Host Spring Dinner Series 2022
The latest dinner series will feature a unique five-course meal each week of the spring semester. Guests will be treated to a five-course a la carte menu prepared by students who have teamed up to create their own restaurant concept. Each restaurant concept has a unique name, décor, cuisine, and beverage menu for its featured week.

Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy Alumna Wins 2020 Outstanding Research Publication Award

Alumna Rachael Olufowote Ph.D. won the AAMFT Research and Education Foundation's Outstanding Research Publication Award in 2020 for her article titled, “How Can I Become More Secure? A Grounded Theory of Earning Secure Attachment.” The article was published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy in 2019 and is based on part of Rachael's dissertation covering a grounded theory study on how adults earn secure attachment.

Human Development and Family Sciences Program Turns Baby Bucks Into A Permanent Store
Last fall, the HDFS 3322: Family in the Community class submitted a project for the Center for Early Head Start (CEHS). Students were able to set up a permanent store—Baby Bucks—for families enrolled in the center and the local community. Baby Bucks offers families access to buy gently used clothing items including clothes, shoes, socks, and other childcare items.

Larry Vanderwoude graduated from Texas Tech on Dec. 11, with his bachelor's degree in human sciences. Vanderwoude is passionate about giving back to others in recovery. He and his wife Paula established two endowments in the Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities (CRC) at Texas Tech, a decision they didn't hesitate to make. The scholarship and operation endowments greatly benefit Texas Tech students at the CRC, supported by knowledgeable faculty and staff to guide them in their academic journey in recovery.
