Smart Babies Water Benefit: Tidbit #6
Baby Swim Enhances Neurological Development
Children experience considerable tactile stimulation from the water resistance over the entire body while swimming which boosts neurological development.
-Water is 600 times more resistant than air, creating a tactile experience that is important for overall neural organization.
-Results from Dr. Ruth Rice's research showed that infants made compelling gains in mental and neurological development from the tactile stimulation of the nerve pathways of the skin and vestibular nerve cells.
-Other research by Dr. Joel Stager revealed that active swimmers have a slower decline in their working memory capacity and nerve conduction velocity.
This and other research by Lana Whitehead can be found in her book, Water Smart Babies: Scientific Benefits of Baby Swim Lessons.
Instructor of the Month:
Melody Clarke
Melody has been with our Swim School for 3 years now. She is a Nashville Native, and a 2nd grade teacher at St. Bernard Academy.
What is your favorite group to work with and why? I love teaching the 3-6 year olds, especially the ones who are still learning how to navigate the water.  It is fulfilling to watch the progress they make over time.

When did you fall in love with teaching swim lessons? I have been around water my whole life and would unofficially teach my friends the strokes. I fell in love with teaching swim lessons 3 years ago when I started working with Ensworth Swim School.

What is your favorite memory teaching swim lessons? My favorite memory is watching kids swim the length of the pool for the first time!

What do you do when you aren’t teaching swim lessons? I am a consultant for Rodan+Fields and enjoy traveling each summer when I am not teaching 2nd grade.

Fun fact? I will try any food!  I may not like it, but I will try it. Some weird things I have eaten are cicadas and a chicken hearts.
From the entire staff of Ensworth Swim School, we want to thank you all for a great semester of swimming!
We hope everyone has a fun and SAFE summer!
