Isaiah 43:25
“I, even I, am he who blots out
your transgressions, for my own sake,
and remembers your sins no more."

New International Version (NIV)
Karl Barth said, "Everyday, we ought to begin, we may begin with the confession:  I believe in the forgiveness of sins."  Do we believe in the forgiveness of sins?  Do we believe that God has forgiven us?  Do we believe that we can forgive others?  Jesus connected God's forgiviness of us and our forgiveness of others in the prayer he taught the disciples:  "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us."

Who says we are forgiven?  God.  "I even I am he who blots out your transgressions."  Why does he do it?  For our own good?  For the good of others?  God forgives for his own sake.  Isn't that amazing?  God forgives us, not grudgingly but willingly, purposefully.  The one who made us, and the one against whom we sin forgives us for his own sake.

How long are we forgiven?  God has purposefully chosen to forget our sins.  Even when we can't forget, he does.  So when we stand before him complete in Christ, we will be judged righteous by what Christ has done.  How will we live today?  Every day . . . we ought to . . . we may begin with this confession:  "I believe in the forgiveness of sins."  Say it.  Believe it.  Rest in God's forgiveness today and live in his freedom.

 Pray with me:
Father, those whom you set free are free indeed.  Free us from the encumbrance and entanglement of our besetting sins.  Keep your servants from secret sins.  We start this day with a clean slate, washed in the blood of Christ.  Do not let our hearts be drawn again to what is evil.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
