Lactation Corner Q & A
Is it okay to use lanolin for my nipple pain?
Answer: Nipple cream will not remedy the problem of nipple pain. An assessment by a lactation consultant at Newborn Connections can be useful to help improve your baby's latch to eliminate nipple pain. This will also ensure that the baby is adequately breastfeeding for appropriate growth.
How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?
Answer: Signs of adequate intake are: regular wet diapers, mustard-colored stools, and weight gain of about an ounce per day. In the beginning, wake your baby every 2-3 hours and ensure at least 20-30 minutes of adequate feeding. Baby will be awake, swallowing and sucking. Also, learn baby's hunger cues - waking, rooting - and fullness cues - relaxed, "milk drunk" appearance. A lactation consultant can help you recognize feeding cues. Register for the Latch Clinic at Newborn Connections or attend our breastfeeding group to discuss your concerns.
My baby is always rooting and seems to still be hungry. Maybe I don't have enough milk?
Answer: If your baby breastfeeds within the time frame discussed in answer #2, then your baby has had a good feeding and may just wish to suckle for soothing. More skin-to-skin time during and after feedings with you, or before or after feedings with your partner, can help baby to feel more secure and relaxed.
Remember, if your baby has enough wet and stool diapers, and is gaining weight consistently, you are supplying your baby with enough milk. Your supply matches your baby's demand, so it is very important to follow regular breastfeeding guidelines.
