A Note from Leadership - Stanley Chetcuti
We hope you have had an incredible summer. Over the past quarter, MISHC’s work improving collecting and documenting Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaires caught the attention of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and was shared via an article in their Value Partnerships Update.
The MISHC Coordinating Center staff has dedicated time to adding more resources for consortium participants including a dedicated email for correspondence about MISHC publications and a consortium-wide calendar. You can expect the new Best Practice Protocol, “Post-TAVR Conduction System Abnormalities” soon.
We enjoyed gathering with you during the MISHC Collaborative Webinar in June and are eagerly awaiting our in-person MISHC Coordinator/Abstractor Meeting and MISHC Collaborative Meeting in Southeast Michigan this November.
Your partnership with us at the Coordinating Center and with each other across the state makes all the difference for patients undergoing structural heart procedures in Michigan. Thank you for your commitment to improving quality of care and outcomes, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Improving Quality of Life for Patients with Heart Valve Replacement
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan published the article “Improving Quality of Life for Patients with Heart Valve Replacement” in their Value Partnerships Update. The piece outlines the ways that the Michigan Structural Heart Consortium (MISHC) worked to improve the collection and documentation of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) and, as a result, can more accurately detect changes in the KCCQ summary score, which measures quality of life for patients who undergo TAVR procedures. MISHC hospitals collect KCCQ documentation more often than the national average. They saw a 21% increase in the KCCQ summary score from 2016 through 2022 and MISHC patients report a better quality of life 30 days after TAVR compared to the nation. New Process for Report Distribution
The MISHC Coordinating Center will roll out a new process by which you will access your MISHC reports beginning with Q2 2023 reports.
You will no longer access your reports via the password-protected side of mishc.org. Instead, those with report access will receive a secure email to their inbox. Every quarter these links will expire, and you will be provided with a new link to your sites’ data. That link will take you to a directory with your updated current and previous reports.
If you misplace your unique quarterly link, you can use our new lookup tool and have your information re-sent to you. This lookup tool is accessible at downloads.mishc.org. Please do not request a new link from MISHC staff.
For more information about this change, including examples of what the emails will look like, read our blog.

Reminder to Utilize the Contact Update Form to Update Contacts
Please use the Contact Update Form on mishc.org to add, update, or remove contacts from your site. This is the most efficient way for MISHC to ensure we are providing information to the relevant team members at your site. It also ensures the correct people have data entry and report receipt access and that new team members requiring training receive the appropriate information. You will find this link near the top of our “Coordinator Resources” page.

New Best Practice Protocol
A new Best Practice Protocol, “Post-TAVR Conduction System Abnormalities,” is now available on mishc.org. The protocol includes a predictive model for permanent pacemaker requirement that outlines patient and procedural factors. It provides a best practice workflow for each of the currently identified groups of patients with peri-procedural types of management regarding conduction abnormalities. MISHC best practice protocols are based on consortium-wide consensus at the time of publication and are updated regularly. Please remember that best practice protocols do not replace the professional opinion of the treating physician. Thank you to Amr E Abbas, MD, and Brittany Pridham, NP, for leading the development of this resource.

News from BMC2
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s Value Partnerships Update published the article “Increasing Surveillance of EVAR Patients to Improve Long-term Outcomes.” The article shares how BMC2’s quality improvement initiatives led to a dramatic improvement in surveillance imaging documentation for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) procedures in hospitals across Michigan with an increase of over 65% since 2017. Performing and documenting this surveillance imaging allows BMC2 providers to improve patient outcomes by more often spotting and mitigating potential aneurysm ruptures. Read the entire article in the “News” section of bmc2.org.
