#9: Tips And Resources For NYC Living

We hope your preparations for New York are going well. This message is the ninth of an email series for new international students (catch up on previous emails if you missed any). They contain very important immigration information and resources to help you acclimate to NYU and to the US.

This email discusses practical living matters such as furnishing your apartment, navigating public transportation, and more.

Learn How To Navigate New York

Even though most of New York is on a grid system, it can take a while to master navigating the city and using the public transit system. Familiarize yourself with the New York subway system.

Nervous about navigating the transit system in NYC? There are so many ways to get where you need to go - walking, the subway, buses, and taxis. In this video, students share their top tips for getting around the city.

Resources Mentioned in the NYC Transit & Getting Around Video

MetroCard: Learn where you can buy a MetroCard.
OMNY: You can use your contactless credit card, debit card, digital wallet on your phone or smart device, or a loaded OMNY card to enter the subway.
Google Maps: Use Google Maps (or any other transit app) to determine routes and transit times
NYU Shuttle Buses: There are seven routes operating from 7am to midnight during the academic term in Manhattan and Brooklyn
NYU Safe Ride: The Safe Ride service is a no-cost alternative means of transportation between NYU facilities in Manhattan and Brooklyn during overnight hours. Safe Ride service is available from 11pm to 7am during the academic term.
In addition to NYC taxis, you can schedule rides on Lyft and Uber.
Citi Bike: Learn more about biking at NYU, where to buy and store bikes, and student discounts on Citi Bike membership
PATH: The PATH train system connect New Jersey and New York
NJ Transit: New Jersey Transit connects major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia

Tips and Resources to Get Your New Place Set Up

Whether you’re planning to live on or off campus, your first step will be to equip your new home with basic fittings and necessities such as bedding, storage, and kitchenware. Read up on our tips and resources for NYC living and the top places to shop at.

Note: If you will be living in an NYU residence hall, make sure to review NYU housing policies before purchasing any large furniture items.

International Student Orientation

Plan to join us for a mandatory orientation where you’ll learn your legal requirements in the US. Even if you’re returning from a leave of absence, you’ll find the information a good refresher. But it’s only mandatory for students who are attending their first semester at NYU in New York. Remember, your US education is dependent on your immigration status. You’ll also receive helpful resources for NYC living, work options in the US, and more.
