| Student Spotlight: Olivia Loveland
Olivia Loveland, a senior, is one of only four students in the country to receive the 2015 James W. Redhouse Prize for Best Progress in Turkish from the American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages and the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association.Olivia is an International Development major, studying both Turkish and Spanish. She says she enjoys studying language because she is simultaneously learning about a new culture and connecting with people she otherwise wouldn't have been able to. Read more about Olivia.

| The CLAS Dean's Office Welcomes New Associate Deans
Associate Dean of Faculty- DeLys Ostlund, Ph.D.is a professor of Spanish at PSU. She has taught courses at the intermediate through graduate levels in language, phonetics, and the literature of Spain from the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century. Dr. Ostlund brings a wealth of experience in hiring, the promotion and tenure process, and mentoring junior faculty. Previously, she served as an administrator in the PSU Office of Graduate Studies.
Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs- Matt Carlson, Ph.D. is a professor of Sociology at PSU. Recently, he has served as Special Assistant to the Dean and as Chair of Sociology. Dr. Carlson brings extensive experience using data to inform curricular decisions and has led collaborative partnerships with local community colleges to help PSU better understand how to serve its transfer students in Sociology.
Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs- Todd N. Rosenstiel, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Biology. As a research active faculty member and graduate mentor, he brings a wealth of experience in understanding the issues associated with supporting research, scholarship, and graduate training at PSU. Most recently, he served as the Director of PSU's Center for Life in Extreme Environments, and he maintains a significant research program on the terrestrial ecology of Antarctica.

| New Faculty Joining CLAS in Fall 2016
Communication- Brian Manata earned his Ph.D. in communication from Michigan State University in 2015. He brings expertise in organizational communication and methods, persuasion, and interpersonal communication.
Sociology- Julius McGee is finishing his dissertation at the University of Oregon, where he expects to earn his Ph.D. in sociology in May of 2016. Mr. McGee’s research highlights the economic and environmental impacts of urban and rural development. He will extend existing departmental strengths in environmental sociology and urban sociology.
- Aaron Roussell comes to PSU from Washington State University, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. Dr. Roussell earned his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law & Society in 2013 from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Roussell’s work focuses on conceptions of race and class as they relate to policing, public disorder, and drug law. Dr. Roussell will expand on existing departmental strengths in the sociology of crime and deviance.

Read more here Max Rudolph, Geology, co-authored "Viscosity Jump in Earth's Mid-Mantle" published in Science Magazine, Dec. 11, Vol. 350, No. 6266, pp. 1349-1352. The paper presents the first geophysical evidence for a viscosity increase deep within Earth's mantle.
