"Don't be afraid. They sense fear." Not very helpful. Have you ever heard that? When I was young, frightened of bees, wasps, and dogs, this was the last thing I wanted or needed to hear. More recently, our daughter Casey told me not to show fear to our Hereford heifer Maylee. Thankfully, with God's help I have been able to overcome many of my fears. But some remain.
I like God's answer to our fears better. "Do not fear." Why not? "I am with you." God not only tells us not to fear but he gives us real reasons why we don't have to be afraid. He promises his presence and his power. As a boy, I sometimes went with my father to buy parts at a junkyard. The junkyard dogs I saw lived up to their bad reputation. My dad never feared a dog, so when I was with him, somehow I knew I did not have to be afraid. Just so, our God is greater than all our fears.
God is with us. God will not leave us. God is for us. God is sovereign King over the whole universe he created. No need to fear. Don't fear!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the powerful promise of your presence today and everyday. Help me to take you at your word. You are our light and our salvation. Whom shall we fear? You are the stronghold of our lives. Of whom shall we be afraid? Vanquish our fears today as we live in the promise of your presence and your power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
