Psalm 32:5-7
Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
    my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
    will not reach them.
You are my hiding place;
    you will protect me from trouble
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.

New International Version (NIV)
                 When Jacob saw forgiveness in his brother Esau’s face, he thought he was looking at the face of God.  Why?  God’s face is the face of forgiveness.  All of the people in the Bible are broken like all of us.  The song says, “Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a Savior . . .”  No one is perfect.  How about you?

                One man had been out of the church since his adolescence.  Finally after his family pleaded with him, he got up the nerve to go to church.  He went into an Episcopal church and they prayed, “We have done those things which we ought not to have done and we have left undone those things which we ought to have done.”  And he smiled and said, “Good!  Sounds just like my kind of crowd.”

                Like David in the Bible we have made bad choices with eternal consequences.  Like David we can confess and find forgiveness.  Karl Barth wrote,  “Every day, we ought to begin; we may begin with the confession:  ‘I believe in the forgiveness of sins.’”    David believed in forgiveness.  For his sake and ours, it is good to know that God believes in forgiveness as well.   Paul wrote in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Pray with me:
Father, remove not only the penalty of our sin, but also the guilt and shame.  Turn our mourning over sin into the beautiful dance of forgiveness.  Release us from the power of sin as well we pray.  Give us the grace to forgive others as you have forgiven us.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
