Vegetables for the Family
Amarilis, below left, visited the communities this month for our family garden pilot project in Quiejel, Nahualá, and Chuacruz. This project directly benefits 24 artisans and 59 children. Our artisan partners live with different relatives as well, meaning that through this project, 123 relatives benefit indirectly, including grandparents, siblings, aunts/uncles, in-laws, and other close relatives. This is a total of 206 beneficiaries!
Our goal is to implement sustainable, organic vegetable production systems so that the women can produce their own food. These home gardens are viable and economical, especially because the communities with whom Maya Traditions works with have low incomes. Growing their own vegetables allows them to save on family expenses, while allowing other family members to participate and be involved in the gardening process.
