“It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood ...”-Robert Palmer
GO SWILLBURG! Our first Neighborhood Pop-Up Shop tent event was a roaring success, with a gorgeous April Saturday in the upper 70s, a music track of Cab and Blanche Calloway (the former once lived in Swillburg), and plenty of foot traffic outside the Swillbarber who graciously loaned his lawn on Henrietta Street (on the east side of Highland Park Diner), to provide SALES, SALES, SALES of Swillburg swag to benefit the neighborhood.
Most popular item? Our stylish Swillburg Hoodies — dozens were sold, along with Swillburg garden flags & house flags in three designs, heavy Swillburg beer glasses (sold out) and travel mugs, inflatable piggies, t-shirts in five Swillburg designs — and decals and other small items too numerous to mention.
There were free packets of sunflower seeds to brighten neighborhood gardens, sidewalk chalk to occupy the kids, and free Bob’s walnut brownies (until they were gone) to snack on while you shopped.
Thank you mastermind Josh Jacobs in the tent — who planned it, manned it and created many of the designs, not to mention ordering and storing. Thanks, too, to Stephanie Jakas, who seconded Josh in the tent, Dave Fergusson who hauled the tent from storage, and carnival barker ( not really)/veteran leader Judy Lee Hay, who attended to the sweatshirt rack and gently twisted arms as only she can do — all for a good cause. Finally, thanks to JoAnn O’Neill, Kelley Mariano and Bridgett Wales who helped with set-up and take-down, and greeter Frank Tenbroeck.
Footnote: If you missed it today, you can buy most of the items online at Swillburg.com — or come to our next event, being planned now :).
Thank you Swillburgers — you’re the best!

Garden Refresh at Swillburg Neighborhood Community Garden at School 35-JoAnn O'Neill
It was a perfect day for our United Way Day of Caring project to restore and refresh our garden beds at the Swillburg Neighborhood Community Garden at School 35 on May 13!
Our loyal volunteers from the U of R River Campus Libraries and some new volunteers from L3 Harris, along with some dedicated community neighbors tackled the tasks at hand and finished up repairing and refreshing the big day’s project.
A special thank you to our own Dav Fergussen, who supervised and nearly single-handedly managed the repair project, and to the many hands who weeded, loosened soils and carted 6 cubic yards of dirt/compost into these beds to make them look new again!
Loud shout-out to our neighbors at Dogtown and Wegmans Food Markets for our lunches and waters!
Most importantly, a very special thank you to our friends at Pinnacle School 35 for allowing us to have this opportunity to garden and enjoy the fruits of our labors. A surprise treat was to have an opportunity to give Principal Brenda Torres-Santana a first-hand look at the gardens!
And, of course, a thank you to the United Way of Greater Rochester for helping our community organizations with special spring projects and connecting those dots between the organization needing a hand, and the volunteers inspired to give back to their communities.

Bloom Garden Mini Sweep -Megan Fritts
On Saturday, May 15th, around ten neighbors gathered from 9am-12pm at our beautiful Bloom Garden. This garden is in the median at the intersection of Pembroke, 490, Field St, and Monroe Ave. Our volunteers helped to weed and rake the garden to prepare for the flowers that will be planted in June. In addition, the fence along 490 received some much needed TLC with trimming back plants, raking out leaves and trash. We received many kudos and thanks from fellow neighbors as they drove through. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we filled 24 bags of leaves and garbage. Special thanks to Dave for transporting all the bags back to his house to be picked up by the city.
If you were interested in volunteering, but were not available that day, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved! We will have plants coming on June 12 from 9am-12pm that will need to be planted in the Bloom Garden and the round planters that line the sideway on Field St. If you can make it on June 12th, please meet at the Bloom Garden between 9am-12pm.
We would love a volunteer to "adopt" one or more of the round planters for the summer. Plants will be provided, but we would love for volunteers to water and weed them. If you would like to adopt a planter, please let Megan Fritts, mcf1818@gmail.com, know which planter you would be interested in.
