Fun facts: English is not my first language, but I've taught English for over 20 years and published a 4-book fantasy novel written in English. I run and ride my bike regularly.
I can help you with ... UIC information, academic advising, and registration for the next semester. I work with our instructors to make sure they have everything they need to teach great classes.

Fun Facts: I grew up in Poland and speak English, Polish, and Spanish, but I also studied German and Latin. I’ve been to over 20 countries!
I can help you with... ELPA (the English Language Proficiency Assessment for UIC admission), the Grad+ program, and questions about applying to UIC degree programs. I also work behind the scenes with Kristina and Vit on just about everything, so if you’re not sure who to ask, I’m always happy to help point you in the right direction.

Fun Facts: I spent one year studying in Italy during high school and another year in college. I speak English, French, Italian, Spanish, and a little Arabic.

To celebrate UIC SJI is hosting a film screening of two LGBTQIA+ movies, “Happy Birthday, Marsha!” and “Intentionally Erased."
UIC SJI suggests you wear a face mask to this event.

The UIC Unreal Fest Game Jam is a three-day, event where students and alumni come together to design and build interactive experiences using Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
No game making experience is required. This event is free but has limited spots.

Summer Free Flim Screenings |
This year's Summer Screening program theme is America’s most iconic highway, Route 66. Since it is Route 66 100th Anniversary this summer, all the free movies will be about the characters being on a journey whether that is crossing the city, country, or the sea!

It is week three, and you are feeling overwhelmed with all of the homework. On top of that, you have homework for multiple classes. Some of the homework is due the next day, and some homework is due next week. Some homework assignments are simple and short, but other homework assignments have three or more steps. How can you remember it all? When do you have the time? Good news! It feels impossible right now, but once you learn the secret to conquering the homework giant, you will feel much better. Are you looking to begin the application process, but you do not know where to start? Maybe you missed last week's University seminar, and now you feel completely lost. Well, take a deep breath! Here are some tips to help you.
Did you know? Most students apply to multiple universities. American students are often told to apply to three or more schools. Which ones should you apply to?
|
- Apply to a “safe school.” This is a university that you are sure you will get accepted to because you have a better GPA and test scores than the school requires or expects.
- Apply to at least one “likely school.” This is a university that will probably accept you because your GPA and other scores match the requirements.

Apply to at least one “stretch school.” This is a university that you would like to go to, but which may not accept you.

Understanding Teacher's Comments |
Does your teacher like to write a lot of comments on your writing assignments? Why do teachers do this? Teachers write comments for several reasons.
|
- To point out your most common writing errors – Teachers typically look for your most common errors, and then they highlight and comment on those.
- To show you a specific mistake so you see it and look for it in the rest of your paper. They won’t correct all your mistakes for you,so always look at all of the paper for the same type of error.
- To help you know when to use a specific word or phrase. If you use a dictionary, you will note, for example, that it’s good to say, “We watch TV” rather than “We see TV.”

This is another way they can teach you good writing skills, style and form. Read their comments carefully!
What do you do when you get your paper back?
|
- Start with a positive attitude: Making changes to your paper will help you get a better grade. Think of the marks as teaching points instead of mistakes.
- Review all of the comments your teacher makes. Do you understand them all? If you don’t understand what your teacher writes, the best thing to do is ask your teacher what it means!
- Send them an email, make a comment on your Google doc, or reply to the teacher's comment. Set up a time after class to talk to your teacher. Ask, "What do I need to do differently next time I write?"

Remember that your teacher wants you to be able to find your own mistakes, and it starts with reading and understanding your teacher’s comments.
