Penn Information Systems & Computing
February 2019 Update
Two-Step Verification
The Two-Step Verification team is pleased to announce that approximately 60,000 people across campus are now enrolled in Two-Step, including more than 16,000 staff and contractors, 9,200 faculty, and 26,000 students. As of February 14, current students are required to use Two-Step, and to date 99% of undergraduate and 85% of graduate students have enrolled. This change is part of Penn’s ongoing efforts to enhance security for University information assets and users’ personal data.
Internal IAM Project
The Internal IAM project includes a re-engineering of Penn's core IAM infrastructure to dramatically improve the security, efficiency, and usability of Penn's central user- and privilege-management systems. The new cloud-based IAM solution will be implemented in phases. Recent progress includes:
  • The project team continues to work through current state discovery and requirements of University identity source and target systems. Work is being prioritized to shape the recommended scope for Release 1.0 in FY20.
  • Client conversations will be scheduled during Q3/Q4 of FY19 in alignment with Release 1.0 recommendations.
  • Vendors of Identity Life Cycle Management systems are being invited to provide product demonstrations. This process will help narrow down the vendors best suited to meet Penn’s needs, which in turn will inform the Q4 RFI/RFP process.
Consumer IAM (CIAM) Project
The Consumer IAM (CIAM) project (formerly called "External IAM") will develop a new, cloud-based IAM system for populations who neither need nor want all the access privileges and security requirements associated with a PennKey (e.g., non-traditional learners, research collaborators, business partners, and other external affiliates). Recent progress includes:
  • The project team has completed their single sign-on (SSO) prototype work in close cooperation with the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy (MEHP). This service improves the user experience for non-traditional learners by providing a seamless SSO process to be used across course selection and enrollment, registration and payment, and course attendance/completion.
  • The project team continues to meet with representatives from departments that manage non-credit online learning programs. If you manage a non-credit online learning program or if you have other interests in CIAM capabilities for your group, please contact us at penn-iam@upenn.edu so that we may keep you informed about the project and discuss how you can be involved.
