University welcomes other anchor institutions to ChicagoOn Tuesday, November 18, the University hosted the annual conference of the Anchor Institutions Task Force (AITF), which brought together nearly 200 representatives of higher education and medical institutions from across the country to share best practices and develop strategies for advancing the role of anchor institutions in their communities. University's partnership with CASE helps grow local businesses Inter-City Supply has been providing soap, hand sanitizer and paper towels to the University of Chicago Medical Center since 2004. With an expanded hand-washing research project underway, UChicago Medicine is expecting soap use to increase by 50 percent. Read more

Partner Spotlight: Timuel BlackRaised on Chicago’s South Side, Black began his life of social activism as a teenager, walking a picket line to protest discriminatory employment in his neighborhood. Working alongside political and social activists like Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. DuBois and A. Phillip Randolph, Black played a central role in efforts to organize unions, register citizens to vote, and eliminate segregation in the armed forces and Chicago Public Schools. He organized Chicago’s participation in the 1963 March on Washington and helped lead the successful campaign of Harold Washington to become Chicago’s first black mayor. Read more
Black is a member of the University of Chicago Community Advisory Board for the Obama Presidential Library’s op-ed. The Chicago Tribune recently published his impassioned case for why the Presidential Library should on the South Side. Read more
