New cultural centers offer safe spaces, belonging on PSU campus

This month, PSU celebrates the formal openings of two important cultural centers on campus. This Wednesday, Nov. 8, is the highly anticipated grand opening of the MENASA Cultural Center, a gathering and community-building space for our Middle East, North Africa and South Asia community. Last Friday, the DREAMer Resource Center opened, offering a safe, supportive space for DREAMers and undocumented students. PSU President Ann Cudd wrote on her blog about these centers and called for a campus-wide commitment to create a community that rejects intolerance and pursues peace.

Reflections on the lasting influence of veterans at PSU

Did you know that Portland State University was founded in 1946 to serve World War II veterans returning home from war? Originally the Vanport Extension Center, it offered two years of college studies, plus family housing and other resources. In honor of Veterans Day, which we observe this Friday, Nov. 10, PSU President Ann Cudd writes about the enduring legacy of veterans at Portland State University. Discover majors and minors in Applied Linguistics

Applied Linguistics is the study of language to address real-world problems. As a broad field that touches many aspects of human interaction, Applied Linguistics includes subjects such as how language works in the brain, interactions between language and culture, and teaching English as a second language (TESL). The field is closely tied to social sciences, foreign language studies, and English language arts. As a result, students often major in Applied Linguistics with a minor in one of those related areas or vice versa.
