| Dear Community,
Welcome to the Silver community. I am excited to share the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) monthly newsletter with our community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The newsletter is grounded in four pillars linked to reflective questions and practices focusing on Accountability, Community, Trust, and Transparency (ACTT). I invite you to engage in the co-creation of knowledge, the reimagination of social work, and the practice of restorative communication in meetings, classes, and drop-in hours. Together, we will explore antiracism practices and policies as we strive to build pathways toward healing humanity. We stand in solidarity as disrupters of oppression in the U.S. and the global community, especially against the violent attacks on women in Iran and the transgender and gender non-conformity community. Only through community can we challenge systems of oppression. Community is our superpower, and the purpose of the newsletter is to support a more inclusive and welcoming community for all to learn and work in the service of others.

Prime Minister Launches Canada’s first Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan
| |

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau launched the country’s first Federal two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender diverse people (2SLGBTQI+) Action Plan in August. The Plan speaks to the concerns of Canada’s diverse 2SLGBTQI+ communities using intersectional, holistic, and long-term approaches to break down barriers, discrimination, and oppression.

The Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP) is hosting an interactive virtual workshop in which participants will review essential concepts around racial justice and solidarity with BIPOC communities while learning how to apply this knowledge to concrete actions.

White Accountability Groups
NYU Silver has two White Accountability Groups for faculty and staff and another for students. All three bring white and white-passing members of the Silver community together regularly to examine how white supremacy and racism operate in subtle and direct ways within people, communities, and institutions and to advocate for racial justice.

Valuing Rural Minority Communities: Inclusive Growth, Broadband, and Leadership

This report by the Brookings Institute explores America’s persistent neglect of minority communities of color, specifically Indigenous and Gullah/Geechee communities in rural spaces, sitting at the intersection of race and isolation. The report expands the framework necessary to accommodate the specific needs of the underserved and influence policy-making.

| Pronouns and Name Pronunciation in Albert
| |
NYU has introduced a great resource to build an inclusive classroom and community at Silver. Students now have the opportunity to add their pronouns, as well as the pronunciation of their names, into Albert. This information is accessible to faculty, advisors, and administrators in Albert and other NYU systems. Students can also opt-out of having their pronouns viewable.

NYU Takes Action: A Bystander Intervention Training SeriesThursday, September 29, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM EST
In this session, learn about the 5 Ds of Bystander Intervention and the services offered by Campus Safety. NYU Takes Action: A Bystander Intervention Training Series aims to equip our community with a variety of approaches for responding to harassment and violence. A collaboration between OGI, Campus Safety, and Student Affairs.

Real ConversationsFridays at 4:00 PM EST

Real Conversations is a drop-in wellness group for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students at Silver. To advance Silver‘s Action Against Racism, Dr. Tiffany Llewellyn of the Student Health Counseling & Wellness Services, Peer Advocates Gerri Connaught and Fatima Mabrouk, and DEI Director Richeleen Dashield provide socioemotional support for students. BIPOC students may register for Silver’s Real Conversations below to attend the sessions planned for Fridays at 4:00 PM.

Hood Feminism Group Reading

NYU Administrative Management Council (AMC) Brave Readers Club is an initiative based on AMC Brave Conversations. The current book being discussed is Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot by Mikki Kendall. Kendall’s work interrogates the failings of the mainstream feminist movement and calls for practice-oriented feminism: one that moves beyond academic theories. Wade, the biggest challenges of this moment, and its opportunities.

This podcast has featured dozens of guests discussing experiences with antisemitism and working against hate and bias.

Migrant Trafficking Echoes the Legacy of the South’s Racist Relocation Schemes
Earlier this month, southern governors transported asylum seekers from border towns to northern cities. This NPR piece details how segregationist governors in the 1960’s utilized similar strategies to relocate Black Americans from the South to northern states under false pretenses in the racist, retaliatory scheme known as “The Reverse Freedom Rides.”
