1 John 4:19-21
We love because he first loved us.  Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.  And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
New International Version (NIV)
In the cross we see the vertical and horizontal dimensions of love.  God’s love comes down to us in Christ and we share that love with others.  Our motivation for loving others is God’s love for us.

So much of the hate we see in our culture comes from fear of the other.  But God’s perfect love casts out our fear.  We deserved punishment for sin, but on the cross God traded hospitality for our hostility.

Now it is our turn.  We cannot love God and simultaneously love others.  His love overwhelms hatred like light pushes out darkness.  God loves us perfectly.  Now it is our turn.  We love each other, we love our neighbors and we love our enemies.  This is the love that changes the world!

 Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your perfect love which casts out all of our fear.  Show us the ones you want us to love.  Give us the privilege today of exchanging hospitality for hostility.  Let us so love that the world sees your love in us.  In the name of our crucified and risen Lord.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
