Chair Reflections
John Bailer with 2019 graduates
Greetings from the south side of Upham Hall.
Graduation is a time of excitement and celebration. I had the pleasure this spring of working with seniors in our capstone data practicum class (STA 475). Student teams worked with clients looking at:
  • What are the effects of arts programs on residents of nursing homes
  • Whether a generalized Montessori model for interaction impacts the well-being of participants in an adult day care facility
  • Do different training regimes results in different strength gains
  • How do attitudes towards e-Bikes changes after use
  • Trends in overdose deaths with fentanyl analogs being detected (see the app update in our gallery of data visualizations)
This is a great opportunity for our students to synthesize their study of statistics to meet the needs of clients, and I’m delighted to report that clients are very impressed by the work of our majors.  You will have a chance to meet the current generation of these students if you return to campus on November 7-9 for the 10th anniversary conference for the Department of Statistics (details below).
You can try to find me in the “Where’s Waldo” chair identification challenge below (with Spring 2019 data practicum class)

  • Seonjin Kim was promoted to associate professor and tenured
  • Lynette Hudiburgh was promoted to Senior Lecturer
  • The department was a major participant in the Analytics and Data Science Program, one of the projects supported by the Boldly Creative Initiative
  • Miami’s new provost, Jason Osborne, was just appointed and he will have his tenure home in our department (I don’t think I will get to assign him any teaching)
Best wishes for the summer holidays,

We had a very successful launch of the STA-AAMP program this year. We had 15 alumni and friends of the department share in the wisdom, experience and mentoring of our alumni.
Matt Wheeler, Sandy Steiger, Mike Anderson, Justin Hillier, Mitch Beebe, AJ Tatro, George Jerdack, Steve Ruberg, Bob Starbuck, Jill DeMatteis, David Friedenberg, Joel Chaney, Marissa Clark, Pam Castricone, Bryan Bell - thank you for taking the time to meet with students and to meet with the chair, visit classes and present about your careers. We are going to focus our Fall 2019 STA-AAMP on the Fall Conference.
There will be a Thursday, Nov. 7, evening mentoring and networking event for alums to connect with students. We hope to see you there!
MU alum named CADS Director
We are delighted to announce that Sandy Steiger, MS Statistics alum, has been named of the Center for Analytics and Data Science (CADS).
Sandy worked for 15 years in industry, most recently as the Vice President of Insights at 84.51 before joining the leadership team at CADS.
CADS project with STA connections
Heather Bainey, actuarial science minor and UASP math and statistics scholar, worked with three other students and faculty mentor Tom Fisher. This student team analyzed part-sales and whole good-sale data in the fall for a company to improve its parts sales forecast. They were able to build a model that resulted in a 30% improvement upon the current model used by the company.
Graduating seniors Bri Clements and Nichole Rook were part of a CADS team with faculty mentor, John Bailer. They built an interactive data visualization application for the Butler County Department of Health using infant mortality data. This project will help the department better disseminate information to all of its constituents. Bri will be working at the Collaboratory in Columbus in a data science team led by MS Statistics alum Brian Sampsel. Nichole will be working in Chicago.

100th Episode of Stats+Stories Podcast - this summer!
Stats + Stories is approaching a milestone - the century mark! The 100th episode will come out in a few weeks.
We are delighted that our partnership with the American Statistical Association continues. A recent episode of particular interest is a conversation about the special P-value issue of The American Statistician with guest Nicole Lazar (S+S #93).
We are planning to do a live S+S recording at the November conference with Miami alum Vicki Hertzberg. Yet another reason to join us in November!
