Exodus 12:40-42
t"Noe the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all of the Lord's divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for generations to come."
New International Version (NIV)
"Why is tonight different than any other night?”  The youngest child in observant Hebrew families has asked this question every Passover Seder meal for over 3000 years.

In answer, the father explains how God delivered his people from Egypt.  Each generation must remember God’s powerful provision for the freedom of his people.  On that night when the firstborn of every Egyptian family died, God redeemed the firstborn sins of all of Israel because of the blood of the sacrificial lamb spread over the doors to mark their homes.

Today is Ash Wednesday.  For hundreds of years many Christians have seen this day as the beginning of preparation for the celebration which culminates with Easter.

Why is this season on the Christian calendar different than other seasons?  In this season we enter into the sacrifice and sadness which we feel over Christ’s crucifixion.  Then out of the darkness of Good Friday we will emerge into the glorious light of the resurrection.

We cannot ever forget that God redeemed all of humankind with the sacrifice of his only begotten Son.  Not only today but every day, Jesus Christ is the sacrificial Lamb who died for our sins.  Every day for the rest of our lives we remember his sacrifice.

Pray with me:
Pray with me:  Father, how we thank you for this day.  Many of us have no water and no power in a cold city.  Others have broken pipes.  Be merciful to us we pray.  Remind us of your provision for our salvation, the greatest need of all.  How we thank you.  We will not forget.  Let this day be different because we believe in you.  We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Scripture memorization for this week:
John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Hebrews 9:22
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
New International Version (NIV)
Our 2021 Every Day with Jesus readings will follow the Foundations Bible reading plan.  Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
We would love for you to join us as we read through the Bible in one year, while still having the flexibility of reading 5 days per week.  In addition, I will continue my long-standing practice of reading one Psalm a day through the year.  We will also memorize 2 scriptures each week.  As we journal together this year,  Robby Gallaty’s H.E.A.R. plan is a good resource: Highlight a verse that stands out to you, Explain what it means, Apply that truth to your life and Respond to what you’ve read with an action or prayer.
Joyfully,
Duane
