Event Recap:  2014 Leonardo Awards
On a perfect June evening, SMPS/LA celebrated its 31st Anniversary of the Chapter’s Leonardo Awards. Held at Downtown LA’s favorite new spot, the Ace Hotel, approximately 80 SMPS members, guests and colleagues gathered for drinks, dinner and presentations.
SMPS/LA was thrilled to make a first-time donation to the SMPS Foundation and had the opportunity to hear from SMPS Trustee Michelle Fitzpatrick about the Foundation’s mission and current initiatives.
As part of the evening's celebrations, the 2014 Marketing and Communications Awards were awarded to:
1st Place: Lawrence Anderson Photography for their Specific Marketing Piece submission in the Print/Electronic Marketing Piece Category
2nd Place: Lawrence Anderson Photography for their Company Website submission in the Corporate Identity & Digital Media Category
3rd Place: Lawrence Anderson Photography for their Direct Mail Campaign submission in the Corporate Identity & Digital Media Category
Best in Show: HLB Lighting Design for their “We Believe in the Power of Light” submission in the Corporate Identity & Digital Media Category
The Industry Honor Award went to Bringing Back Broadway, the public-private partnership launched in 2008 and charged with an ambitious ten-year plan to revitalize the historic Broadway district between 2nd Street and Olympic Boulevard. Executive Director Jessica Wethington McLean accepted the award and spoke about the progress to date and credited the A/E/C community for being a great partner in their efforts.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Leonardo Award to Shelley Santo, Director of Marketing for Co-Pilots, Inc. and a long-time A/E/C industry professional. Shelley spoke passionately about her career and the support she’s received from her family, as well as clients and colleagues who have become close friends over the years -- many of whom were in attendance. Congratulations Shelley!
Thanks to our generous Annual Sponsors and Event Sponsors. Special thanks to Alisa Greene of Infrastructure Factor and the rest of our Events Committee for their hard work in making the evening so enjoyable.
Education Workshop Recap:
What Clients Want - Elements of a Winning Presentation
On July 15th, Arquitectonica and SMPS/LA member Cindy Ionita hosted 20 participants for an informative, free-to-members webinar given by Dena Wyatt, Principal of Marketing Evolutions, on how to create a winning presentation. The hour-and-a-half webinar focused on the what, why and how of improving your team's performance at hard-won interviews. Ms. Wyatt emphasized that the goal is to persuade your audience and to win their trust. She described ways to connect to your potential client by addressing their issues in a pointed manner and relating that to the proposed personnel on the team. She advocated for multiple in-house practice sessions before the interview. Attendees were given an opportunity to ask several good questions:
Q: How do you keep one of your staff from rambling on or going off point?
A: Practice hand signals ahead of time.
Q: What if the proposed Project Manager is a poor speaker?
A: Practice or get them training beforehand. You could let them draw during the presentation if they're more comfortable talking while drawing.
Q: What about handouts or a leave-behind?
A: It's a good idea, but don't give a copy of the presentation. A one page "placemat" that describes the key points or project team highlights is more effective.
Thanks to Jana Nelson of RNL and the Education Committee for this informative webinar!
