Pronouncing South Asian Names with CareNovember 6th, 12:00 - 1:30 PM ET | 383 Lafayette, C06
South Asian names reflect a rich tapestry of languages, faiths, and cultural traditions across the region. While South Asia encompasses many countries and naming practices, this workshop will focus on names from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Their length, unfamiliar sounds, or multiple pronunciations across diasporic communities can sometimes feel intimidating. In this interactive workshop, we’ll break down names into simple vowel and consonant patterns, practice across different naming traditions, and explore how diaspora variations shape pronunciation. Participants will leave with practical strategies and the confidence to pronounce South Asian names with care and respect.

Key Highlights for International Students This Month
- All international students need to be registered full-time for the spring semester in order to maintain their legal status in the United States. Keep in mind that international students who are unable to register full-time must receive OGS permission to register for a reduced course load in order to keep their immigration status valid. For undergraduate students, a minimum of 12 credits is considered full-time enrollment; for graduate students, typically a minimum of 9 credits is considered full-time enrollment.
- Please inform OGS as soon as possible if a student is dismissed or withdraws so that we can advise students on their options regarding their immigration status. We’re required to notify the US government within 21 days of an action so your help in this is essential!
- This month we begin our Journey to NYU email series (as of November 6) to all international students who have program start dates between January 1 and March 1, 2026. Follow along with the emails these students are receiving at our Journey to NYU web page.
- As always, all emails sent to continuing students are directly linked from our Immigration Updates and Events web page.
- If you were forwarded this email and want to be added to our employee distribution list, sign up to receive OGS + I-Hub Update emails.
