| We have reached the mid-way point for the Fall 2022 semester and it has been busy!
In recognition of the many wonderful events and activities that are happening, I thank you all for your dedication to working with students and one another to provide robust academic and co-curricular experiences. I encourage everyone to take advantage of attending or participating in the remaining social, scholarly and creative activities that are scheduled through the semester's end. Reviewing The Oneonta Bulletin for announcements and Campus Connection for events are the best ways to browse all that is planned.
My gratitude also goes to those who have attended the dialogue sessions we've had so far this semester. I hope to see you at the remaining sessions coming up from 3 - 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 (Facilities Master Plan update in IRC 1/Teams), Nov. 7 (Future professional development brainstorming in IRC 2), and Dec. 9 (Regional Innovation Council update in Craven Lounge, Morris Conference Center). Related to the dialogue sessions, I'd like to remind everyone that applications for the second round of funding for initiatives supporting strategic opportunities listed in the Regaining Momentum agenda are due by Oct. 28.
Sincerely,
Alberto J.F. Cardelle

Middle States Reaccreditation Update
| |
| Andrew Kahl, Professor, Theatre Department
Eileen Morgan-Zayachek, Acting Vice President, Academic Affairs
Theresa Russo, Acting Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
Our Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) reaccreditation process is moving to the next phase. The hard work of the 80 faculty and staff comprising the “standards working groups” has resulted in a first draft of the college’s Self-Study. The draft is available to view on the MSCHE Self Study webpage.
We are hosting our site team chair, Dr. Jeffery Osgood, deputy provost at West Chester University, on Monday, Oct. 24. The purpose of this visit will be to ensure that the campus is ready for the planned April 2-5, 2023, site team visit. Part of Dr. Osgood's assessment will be based on meetings with the college’s MSCHE Steering Committee and Working Group members and discussions about the reaccreditation process with student, faculty, and administrative leadership.
We will hold open forums on Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. and Dec. 2, at p.m. in IRC 3 to discuss our Self-Study report. Please save the date and plan to attend. Reaccreditation is critical for the college and our receipt of federal funding, and we need to receive feedback representing all constituencies. The final version of the Self-Study report is due at the end of Jan. 2023.

News from Communication & Marketing
| |
| Lisa Miller
Senior Communication and Marketing Officer
The Office of Communication and Marketing (OCM) has sharpened its focus on promoting the college to external audiences with three key goals: strengthening the college’s brand identity, improving the college's reputation and supporting institutional enrollment management objectives.
To support identity and brand management, the college’s Institutional Communications Group has been reconstituted as an Institutional Identity Group charged with advising the OCM on requests, projects and initiatives that impact SUNY Oneonta’s brand identity. With cross-divisional membership, the new group will work in partnership with Communication and Marketing to:
- maintain a consistent visual identity in print and digital collateral promoting the college;
- promote messaging that aligns with the college’s mission, vision and values;
- share information with campus colleagues on standards and best practices for presenting and characterizing the college’s brand and identity in all forms of communication; and
- review the College Style Guide annually and make recommendations for updates.
In addition to its close collaboration with the Office of Admissions to develop print and digital collateral for prospective students, parents and school counselors, the OCM is implementing a comprehensive digital advertising recruitment campaign funded by a Regaining Momentum: Strategic Opportunities grant. With targeted messages for prospective first-year, transfer and graduate students, the campaign began in September and will continue through the spring.
OCM also welcomed two new staff members this month, and their work will be critical in increasing our capacity to produce written and video content. Kaleb Smith joined the OCM on Oct. 3, in a new Content Writer position, and Kerryn Taylor started Oct. 13, in the Digital Media Producer role.

Supporting Recruitment & Student Success
| |
| Karen Brown
Senior Enrollment Officer and Executive Director of Admissions
Members of the Student Success Leadership Team (SSLT) and recruitment roundtables are working hard to engage with current students, faculty and staff to evaluate current offerings and plan for the future.
The SSLT has been surveying to gather information about what efforts are already in effect to support student success and retention. The group is looking at several data points and planning for response to specific opportunities where gaps exist. One action item is an automated communication plan to check in with students regularly throughout the semester to gauge how they are doing emotionally, academically, socially, etc. The group is also reviewing results from the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement and the student opinion survey and has hosted meetings regarding our current student success initiatives.
The recruitment roundtables have four working groups that are each developing ideas and strategies for recruiting new students.
- The new programs group is examining how we can expand and improve current programs or opportunities for additional programs – especially at the graduate level. A goal is to identify what students are looking for, what the market is demanding and what is viable for us as an institution moving forward.
- The marketing and communication group is discussing and evaluating perceptions about SUNY Oneonta in our target markets and our current marketing efforts. Highlighting who we are and what is distinctive about SUNY Oneonta are key areas of focus.
- The student sub-populations group is focusing on peer-to-peer mentoring programs and other support systems for first-generation students and those from underserved populations. There is much discussion about what we currently offer, what students coming from high school may desire, and how to reinforce the support throughout the student lifecycle.
- The pipeline group is evaluating opportunities for pre-college programs, community college partnerships, and greater collaboration with community groups which could all help attract students to enroll in coursework or full degree programs here at the college.
Many thanks to the members of each group and the entire college community for your support and collaboration as we work to make important strides forward.
