I know NYU has a strict mask policy, but it's okay if I take my mask off when I'm pretty sure I'll be 6 feet away from other people, right?
Wrong. NYU requires that you wear a face covering AT ALL TIMES on campus, with a few notable exceptions:
- when you're actively eating, 6 feet away from others;
- when you're working in a single occupancy space (that means alone in an office or lab–cubicles do *not* count as a single occupancy space, unless you're the only one in the entire room);
- when you're inside your dormitory room, either alone or with your roommate (though masks still should be worn in the common areas); and
- if you received an accommodation from the Office of Equal Opportunity.
If you're working alone in your office and somebody comes in, put on a mask. If you're eating lunch and you've just finished your last bite, put on a mask. If you're leaving your dorm room in the middle of the night, put on a mask. It's the #1 protective measure we can take to keep our campus safe from the spread of COVID-19, so let's keep up the good work.
And we hate to nag, but wearing a mask means covering both your nose and mouth at the same time - not under your nose, under your chin, on your forehead, or any other variant. If you're ever in any doubt, any one of NYU's student Public Health Ambassadors would be happy to assist you - and they'll even give you a free mask!
