SUMMER SAFETY: THREE QUESTIONS WITH THE LINCOLN CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT
David Broderick, Lincoln City Chief of Police
Q: With the busy summer season just around the corner, what are some key safety tips you have for Lincoln City businesses and organizations?
A: Summer brings more people to our beautiful city, and while we want everyone to have a great time, safety is paramount. The Pacific Ocean is unpredictable. We want hotels and businesses to remind visitors about the potential risks they face when swimming in the ocean, such as rip tides and sneaker waves. Never turn your back on the ocean. If caught in a rip current, stay calm, swim parallel to shore, and then towards shore once you've escaped the current's pull.
With drier conditions, encourage visitors to be extra cautious with campfires and cigarettes. Always check the Oregon State Parks and Lincoln County websites for current fire restrictions before lighting a fire. Ensure campfires are completely extinguished before leaving the area.
Help visitors avoid theft by reminding them not to leave valuables in plain sight inside their vehicles. Guests should also secure all windows and doors in their hotel rooms.
Overnight parking is prohibited at beach access points and local parks. Share this information to avoid any inconvenience to guests.
Q: There are often questions about fireworks around the Fourth of July. Can you clarify the regulations on fireworks in Lincoln City?
A: Absolutely. It's important to remember that it is now prohibited to possess or use any type of personal firework within Lincoln City. This includes firecrackers, sparklers, bottle rockets, and all aerial fireworks. The reason for the ban is to protect public safety and property. We encourage everyone to enjoy the safe and legal professional firework display over Siletz Bay on July 4th.
Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add for a safe summer in Lincoln City?
A: If you see anything suspicious, don't hesitate to report it to the police. We're here to keep everyone safe and ensure a memorable summer for all.
