Pairing STEAM with Stories: Accelerate Access to Stories and STEM Learning

Libraries can foster learning by pairing picture books with STEAM activities. Take a look at these five playful learning programs to provide opportunities for creative approaches to problem-solving.where on the planet.
There is no doubt that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills are critical in the 21st century. Today's economy requires that we all have technological skills, be able to solve problems, and handle non-routine, creative tasks. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) created a framework that has been widely adopted as the standard in these critical competencies.

Participatory Science Opportunity: EZIE-Magnetometer

Applications Open Now
EZIE-Mag – short for EZIE- Magnetometer – is an instrument that measures the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic field extends from the Earth's interior to space, where it interacts with the solar wind, which comes from the Sun. The EZIE-Mag is a sensitive instrument that allows precise measurement of the magnetic field to support the EZIE Mission.
As part of NASA’s EZIE Mission, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab is distributing these instruments to indigenous communities, classrooms, museums/science centers, and libraries around the United States.

“The STAR Library Network (STAR Net) is a hands-on learning network for libraries and their communities across the country. STAR Net focuses on helping library professionals build their STEM skills by providing “science-technology activities and resources” (STAR) and training to use those resources.
STAR Net is built upon a strong network of collaborators and partners, led by the Space Science Institute’s (SSI) National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL).
Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, NASA Office of STEM Engagement, and the NASA Science Mission Directorate.

Professional Development, Conferences and Resources
by Christopher Mick
The Summer months bring special programming at the library. The annual Summer Reading Program, take & make kits, special performers, and for me a few opportunities for professional development. With my focus on STEAM programming at my library, I am always made aware of STEAM related conferences happening locally and nationally. Some of these conferences are geared to full-time K-12 teachers, and some of these conferences are open to informal educators as well. Read more at the link below.

STEAM Engines at Skokie Library: Laws of Motion
by Caitlin Savage
One of my favorite things about science is the way it so frequently looks like magic. From bubbling concoctions acidic and basic to the wizardry of seasonal foliage transformation, enchantment is all around us all the time. I am generally easily impressed, and have faithfully believed in magic my whole life, so I was delighted when I came across an experiment demonstrating Newton’s first law of motion: An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
