Paid Leave Oregon is Oregon's new paid family and medical leave law that allows eligible employees to apply for and receive up to 12 weeks of paid, job-protected leave each year. Like unemployment, the state fund pays the benefits (via employee and employer taxes that began in January). Small employers (even with one employee!) are not exempt from providing this job protected leave beginning in September. Please pay attention to this now so you know what is coming and what to expect!

Identity theft is the nation's fastest growing crime. Most of us put ourselves at risk by using free wi-fi around town, storing sensitive documents on cloud services, and using our smart phones for financial transactions. This month we're highlighting our discounted membership to LifeLock, the industry leader in identity theft protection. Employees can choose two levels of coverage and have the option to add their spouse and children.

Our Portland team recently volunteered at the Children's Book Bank, where we cleaned, repaired and sorted donated children's books for distribution to local kiddos through their Building Home Libraries program for PreK kids and free school-wide book fairs for older students. We recalled and found some of our childhood favorites and can now add Book Repair Experts to our list of Kaya HR services!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year, and back injuries account for one of every five workplace injuries or illnesses. Make back injury prevention the topic of this month's safety meeting and help your employees learn the steps they can take to avoid becoming part of that statistic.
