Dear Director,
I'm delighted to write to you with the news that we've kicked off our 30th anniversary year with two fresh and exciting activities. First, the mainstage literary partner event at AWP in Kansas City, MO earlier this month brought in new audiences and expanded our reach significantly. We saw both new and old friends and made important connections with emerging writers looking for a publisher.
Notably, we achieved an all-time high record for book sales during the event without resorting to discounts. Selling our books at cover price not only bolstered our bottom line but also ensures fair royalties for our authors—an outcome we're truly proud of. At the conference, we introduced a new support system that involved volunteers assisting at the book fair booth alongside our staff. This approach allowed us the time to engage in meetings, attend panels, and network within the literary community, enhancing our overall impact and presence. We are just so pleased with the success of the conference this year and have provided some images below for you to share in this joy with us.
Additionally, we've now officially closed the prize submission period for manuscripts, marking the January launch of the Sarabande Prize in The Essay. This expansion to our annual prize period underscores our commitment to nurturing creative nonfiction and we're looking forward to seeing who Alexander Chee will select for the inaugural prize winner.
The annual AWP conference requires so much focus and energy and yet also manages to re-energize us. As we continue our 30th anniversary celebrations this year we hope you’ll be able to join us at our first YPB open house event in 2024 on March 11 at the Lampton Street headquarters (more info below!).
Cheers,
Sam Hall, Director of Development & Operations
