Parents and Caregivers as Partners Conference Call for Workshop Proposal

The Parents and Caregivers as Partners Conference happening on October 21 and 22, 2023 is seeking proposals for virtual and hybrid (in-person or streaming) workshops, micro-sessions, and panel presentations. The conference provides an opportunity to highlight innovation and high-impact strategies for partnering, collaborating, and nurturing parent/caregiver partnerships and alliances. High Water Levels Brings Increased Risks

The first hint of warming weather and the promise of spring thaw can bring extreme danger to the shores and surfaces of streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. The Toronto and Region Conservation monitors hazardous ice conditions as thaw begins and are reminding everyone to be very careful around all bodies of water.

As warmer temperatures arrive, stream banks become increasingly slippery and unstable. Lake and river ice weakens, becoming thinner or with higher flows breaking with little or no warning. During this time, the potential for flooding and ice jamming is high.

Higher, faster-flowing water and extreme cold temperatures combine to create increased dangers on or near rivers, streams and ponds for people wishing to enjoy the seasonal changes. I ask all parents and caregivers to keep children away from stream banks, ponds and lakes. Please be careful and stay safe!

Duty to Accommodate - Ramadan 2023

Tuesday, March 22, 2023 marks the first week of Ramadan – one of the holiest months in the Islamic Calendar. During this month, Muslims around the world abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset for 29 or 30 consecutive days.

A document is available to TDSB staff that contains information about Ramadan, as well as some tips and considerations for meeting the duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code and TDSB’s Human Rights Policy (P031). The document is now available online.

Equity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Department: Bi-Weekly Offerings

The TDSB is dedicated to working with internal and external partners to establish equitable learning spaces where all students thrive. In light of this ongoing commitment, the Equity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Department offers a vast array of professional learning opportunities, student programming, and community workshops.

2023 Learning Opportunities Index (LOI)

The Learning Opportunities Index has been recalculated for both elementary and secondary schools as part of the regular cycle (every 3 years) in which the Board recalculates the LOI for schools in order to keep within a relevant time period for TDSB student population shifts in schools.

The Learning Opportunities Index (LOI) ranks each school based on measures of external challenges affecting student success. The school with the greatest level of external challenges is ranked number one and is described as highest on the index. It is important to acknowledge that students in all schools have some external challenges, even those schools that are ranked very low on the LOI. The variables used in determining the LOI have been identified as external factors that significantly impact educational achievement.

The variables used to determine the LOI include: median income; low income measure; university degree; no high school diploma; social assistance; and non two-parent families.

Focus on Youth Summer Community Request Applications - Now Open

Community agency applications are now open to participate in the TDSB’s Focus on Youth Summer program. The purpose of the Focus on Youth program is to hire, serve and support students who experience challenges such as socio-economic disadvantages, systemic racism and, since 2020, have been significantly impacted due to the repercussions of the pandemic. For the summer of 2023, the TDSB is focusing on providing meaningful employment and training opportunities to students. The program will run from July 4 to August 18, 2023.

Tutoring Update

This year, using the funds from the Ministry of Education, the TDSB was able to work with community organizations to provide access to March Break Tutoring Camps. The camps engaged students academically while providing them with much needed social-emotional support. Some of the camps even provided youth employment for TDSB students and leadership opportunities.

Online Tutoring continues to be available for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 who are looking for some extra help with their work, or who are looking for different ways to engage academically.
