Cole Sternberg: thirsty while drowning - presented by Villanova University Art Gallery
On Thursday, November 3rd, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM, the Villanova University Art Gallery will hold an opening reception for its new exhibit, thirsty while drowning, a campus-wide conceptual art project that ‘floods’ Villanova’s campus with artist Cole Sternberg’s multi-media commentary on sustainability. For the first time for both the University and the artist, “Easter eggs” of the artist’s work will be placed around campus hinting at what’s to come in the gallery. Each mural features an image taken by Sternberg while traveling across the Pacific Ocean on the maiden voyage of a shipping vessel and many include subtle wordplay related to the spaces they inhabit. The triptych style windows on the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse that face Lancaster Avenue will have a tilted, yet serene, waterscape; Bartley Hall which houses the Business School will have thee-story columns covered in murals; Vasey, the old black box theater, transforms into a watery sunset. The culmination can be found in the Art Gallery, where Steinberg’s “contemporary plein air” paintings will hang. The paintings are dragged through large bodies of water, replacing the human hand’s brushstrokes with the patterns of nature. They are, in essence, the result of the flooding seen in the murals - a style of artwork in which the water becomes the composer and human influences are no longer apparent.

From NPR: "Stephen Strader, a professor at Villanova who studies how humans are vulnerable to natural disasters. He called Florida's population boom an example of the, quote, "expanding bull's-eye effect." Basically, he said, imagine an archer drawing a bow, taking aim at a target. If the target is really small, it's hard to hit. But if it gets bigger and bigger, it gets easier and easier to strike."

From Reader's Digest: “The main reason for the newfound attention from legislators is the aftermath of the 2020 election,” says Jim Ronan, PhD, a political science professor at Villanova University. “Once attention turned to recounts and audits following Election Day, many were surprised to learn just how little federal oversight is provided when it comes to the Electoral College.”

From National Catholic Reporter: "There are key differences between her and the alt-right or even GOP conservative U.S. Catholics," says Villanova theology professor Massimo Faggioli, an Italian who lives in the U.S.
