Clemson celebrates 100 years of chemical engineering

The 100th anniversary of chemical engineering at Clemson University was marked with a full day of events ranging from campus tours, a research seminar, and an alumni dinner. Chemical Engineering was first introduced at Clemson in the 1917-18 academic year. When the program first began, Clemson was a male-only military college. This year, a third of the students in the department are female.

Scott Husson Honored by SC EPSCOR

Husson, a Dean’s Professor was among the recipients of the Stimulus Research Program through the In Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research/Institutional Development Awards. The program was developed to strengthen South Carolina’s research capacity and research competitiveness. Husson leads one of the four selected projects, titled “Anaerobic membrane bioreactors as a next-generation technology to address the food-energy water nexus.”

At the November AIChE Conference in Minneapolis, undergraduate student Hansen Mou accepted the Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award. This award is presented to AIChE student members who have attained the highest sophomore scholastic grade-point average.

Matthew Brabender exploring ways to recycle human waste in outer space

Matthew Brabender was awarded an undergraduate student research fellowship through the South Carolina Space Grant Consortium (SCSGC), which will enable him to continue his ongoing research with Mark Blenner. Blenner and his team are studying how to repurpose astronaut waste to create useful materials, such as polyesters and nutrients.
