From the Chair

Happy Spring 2022 from Clemson and EEES. Despite the many challenges posed by the pandemic, the department has continued to thrive. This newsletter highlights a few of the many success stories for faculty and students.

Ron Falta has received strong support for his research on groundwater modeling and subsurface energy storage from two agencies within the Department of Defense (SERDP and ESTCP). With sponsorship from NASA, Sudeep Popat has been leading work that seeks better ways to extract resources from human waste. And fundamental research on the fate of radioactive materials in the environment by Brian Powell’s team has been highlighted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Last but not least, David Ladner has been elected to serve on the Executive Board for the SC American Water Works Association.

Our students are being recognized too. Jennifer Briglio, a junior in geology, is the winner of a Goldwater Scholarship, and Michael Smith, a senior in biosystems engineering, won a Fulbright Award. A team of four undergraduates majoring in environmental engineering won the national WEFTEC student design competition. One of our biosystems engineering majors, Sam Holberg, received a first-place award for his research poster at the annual conference of the Institute of Biological Engineering. And the accomplishments of doctoral student Jessica Deaver have been recognized by the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. The department is fortunate to have many dedicated and talented faculty, staff and students.

And there is more good news. Emeritus Professor Bob Fjeld was inducted into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists. Bob joins other EEES faculty — Gene Rich and Tom Keinath — and EEES alumni — Jerry Dempsey and George Fletcher — who are also members of the Academy. At the induction ceremony, Biosystems Engineering graduate Mary Katherine Watson was also recognized as an Outstanding Young Alumnus by the College.

For the first time in three years, the graduate students hosted the annual holiday party and the faculty hosted the annual spring picnic — in person! It would be nice to start seeing more alumni in person, too. If you are in the area, please stop by to say hello. We’d like to hear what you’ve been up to.

Wishing you a wonderful spring and summer,

David Freedman, Ph.D.
