HHMI Gilliam Fellowship
The IDEALS Office (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Leadership, and Advancement in the Sciences) would like to invite PhD students studying scientific problems in biomedical sciences, life sciences, or biological questions in related disciplines to attend an information session to learn more about applying for the prestigious HHMI Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study on Wednesday, August 16th from 11:30am-12:30pm.
The goal of the Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study is to increase the diversity among scientists who are prepared to assume leadership roles in science, particularly as college and university faculty. The program provides awards to pairs of students and their dissertation advisers who are selected for their scientific leadership and commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the sciences.
Benefits
For the 2023-2024 fellowship year the award amount is $53,000 per year. This includes an annual fellow stipend of $36,000, an institution allowance (in lieu of tuition and fees) of $10,000, a fellow’s discretionary allowance of $4,000, and an adviser allowance of $3,000 to support diversity and inclusion efforts at the graduate level.
Please carefully read the eligibility criteria in order to verify that you would be able to be nominated for this award. In addition to specific demographic criteria you must be in your second or third year of the PhD program and have advanced or will advance to candidacy by September 1, 2023.
At this information session we'll discuss the nomination process, application timeline, and facilitate a Q&A with current and past Gilliam Fellows (students and faculty awardees) at Duke.
