Staff Updates
Hello! My name is Jenna Decker and I am a dietetic intern through the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. For the past 8 months, I have been doing various rotations throughout the food service and clinical setting and now, I get the opportunity to serve through Brown County Extension for my final community rotation. Throughout my time at FoodWIse, I have observed the passion and creativity that goes into the various programs to instill a love of learning and healthy eating in the people we serve. I’ve had the privilege of assisting with grocery store tours, creating educational materials for school children, filming recipe videos, and assisting at local pantries during my time thus far at FoodWIse, and I cannot wait to continue serving in other capacities. In the future, I will be assisting with the Keller Gardening Project and the Green Bay East High School Mental Health Fair. This rotation has taught me just how vast and diverse the dietetics profession is. As I continue in this rotation, I am eager to continue building my skills, increasing my knowledge, and learn more about the community and the resources available for members and of course, collect some healthy recipe ideas along the way!

Program Updates
The Brown County FoodWIse program was the recipient of a Food Garden Grant. The project is a collaboration between a Brown County FoodWIse team, a garden mentor and volunteer Crystal, and the amazing staff at Keller Elementary School. The funding will help to support the success of the Keller Elementary School garden, increase the diversity of produce grown to better represent the cultural preference of Keller students and families, and work to sustain the garden for future learning. Brown County FoodWIse in collaboration with a garden mentor and volunteer has been teaching garden-based nutrition education at Keller Elementary since 2019. School gardens can provide students with food that improves diet and nutrition, create a space for hands-on learning, and provide a learning opportunity to connect nutrition, environmental stewardship, and tangible skills for the future. The produce from the garden will be incorporated into snacks for students and extra produce will be distributed to Keller Elementary families. Brown County FoodWIse is so appreciative of the support from Crystal, garden mentor and volunteer and the staff at Keller Elementary. Look for more updates on our Facebook page as the start of the garden season is fast approaching!

FoodWIse at the classroom
Chappell School 1st grade and FoodWIse created a wonderful experience for their children. During their “Healthy Choices,” IB unit FoodWIse was able to come in once a week for 5 weeks to read a story, share some knowledge, and share a healthy snack. Some of the topics covered thru the books and discussion included: don’t yuck someone else's yum, how seeds move, how plants grow, and importance of movement along with MyPlate. Children were “risk-takers” and tried items such as a seed salad, veggie sushi and Moonsquirters (tomatoes). Some of the quotes teachers stated on a survey: that the children “wanted to plant foods at home”, “ Our students grew more open-minded to trying new foods”, “During lunch students brought attention to their healthier choices”.

As spring approaches, there will be multiple food drives happening in Brown County, including the annual Scouting for Food Drive and the Letter Carrier’s Annual Food Drive. Help those in need in Brown County by donating healthy and nutritious food. Healthier food pantry donations means more nutritious food available for our community.
