Tutor Spotlight

1. Introduce yourself:
My name is Heidi and I’ve lived in Charlottesville for over 20 years. Since volunteering within my community has always been an important part of my life, it was only a matter of time before I discovered Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle.

 2. Why did you choose to tutor at LVCA?
Mostly, my volunteer time had been spent working closely with children or the elderly. LVCA’s need for tutors to assist adult learners sounded like a new possibility. In addition, LVCA offered online training, which was very appealing in light of volunteer challenges created by the Pandemic.

3. What do you like about tutoring?
Tutoring adults so they might gain a better grasp of the English language and American culture allows me to share some of myself with some really brave and wonderful people. Building relationships with those who may not feel comfortable with or understand English allows me a chance to help our community become a more cohesive and friendlier place.

4. What is the biggest lesson you have learned from tutoring?
Respect and admiration for those facing challenges of relearning such basics as the English alphabet, or the mechanics of forming letters, or writing and saying words. I’m amazed every time a student attempts to say or write a word in English; it’s a huge deal and a humbling one.
