It surprised me a bit, having studied Latin and Greek (and French!) at Haverford, that I ended up in college not as a classics major, but as a music major. And then to have pursued master’s and doctoral studies in music history, leaving classics behind. But I had always loved the organ and have been a church organist from VI Form until now. Read more >
2. Note a memorable Haverford School experience.
As a fourth- or fifth-grader, I was down with some childhood disease or other. One evening while I was sick, my parents had a previously planned dinner party, with the guests of honor being Headmaster Severinghaus and his wife. Read more >
3. Recount an inspiring or defining moment in your career.
After junior year in college I was taking a summer organ workshop at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, and managed to book a couple of lessons with the head of the Organ Department there. I told her that I would likely soon be giving up the organ when I went to theological college. She countered by giving me the biggest musical pep talk I have ever had. Read more >
4. What are some of your other interests?
Local history, forestry, genealogy. Yes, I have checked to see if I am related to any of my classmates. And yes, distant though they may be, there were certainly cousins of mine in my class, as well as among our teachers!
