Student Spotlight: Lea Johnson!

This week’s student spotlight is of Lea Marie Johnson. Lea is a Secondary Art Education major here at UMKC. Her favorite place on campus is the School of Education Learning Commons. “I love studying or working there and being around other future educators," Lea explains, "It’s great to be able to ask questions, bounce around ideas or get feedback from others. I am a non-traditional student and the support and guidance I have personally received has been integral to my success.” While attending UMKC, Lea's favorite experience with a student was during a 3rd grade lesson helping students work on an Op Art project using lines and shading to produce a "3D look." She says, “It was amazing to see the student’s reaction to their own work as they began to see the special effects they had created!”

Lea's favorite places in Kansas City are the Crossroads District because it is artsy, eclectic, edgy, and evolving, and her 1920’s bungalow in the Argentine neighborhood because it is warm, cozy, and has character. Her go-to coffee is an Irish Cream or Vanilla Cappuccino from The Roasterie Cafe on Southwest Blvd. or Second Best Coffee.

Free COVID-19 Testing for Students

Rapid COVID-19 testing is available free and by appointment to all students, faculty and staff, whether or not they are experiencing symptoms. Testing takes place in a convenient drive-up clinic that allows those being tested to stay in their vehicles. The test involves anterior nose swabbing, much less discomforting than interior nose swabbing. Results take about 15 minutes. Testing is provided by appointment, so visit the following link to schedule your test today!
